The US Geological Survey ground failure product: Near-real-time estimates of earthquake-triggered landslides and liquefaction

چکیده
Since late 2018, the US Geological Survey (USGS) ground failure (GF) earthquake product has provided publicly available spatial estimates of earthquake-triggered landslide and liquefaction hazards, along with qualitative hazard population exposure-based alerts for M > 6 earthquakes worldwide in near real time (within ?30 min). Earthquake losses are oftentimes greatly aggravated by impacts due to failure, yet those particular events dramatic additional have not, heretofore, been rapidly identifiable. The GF now provides situational awareness about potential extent severity crucial period before direct observations available. We describe our implementation lessons learned from that occurred since was released. design process, underlying models, methods we developed modeling uncertainty, development alert levels. produced 320 over 2-year its public 2018 through early 2021. majority these yielded lowest level (green) all ground-failure types, 25 resulting elevated or exposure landslides 47 liquefaction. In a comparison between occurrence information, found succeeds at assigning appropriate levels cases. Based on experience product, identified following priorities future improvements: (1) refinements probabilistic models incorporate explicitly model type landslide/liquefaction; (2) fatalities economic failure; (3) estimation infrastructure.

Optimized volume models of earthquake-triggered landslides
In this study, we proposed three optimized models for calculating the total volume of landslides triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan, China Mw 7.9 earthquake. First, we calculated the volume of each deposit of 1,415 landslides triggered by the quake based on pre- and post-quake DEMs in 20 m resolution. The samples were used to fit the conventional landslide "volume-area" power law relationship and t...
متن کاملParallel Finite Element Modeling of Earthquake Ground Response and Liquefaction
Parallel computing is a promising approach to alleviate the computational demand in conducting largescale finite element analyses. This paper presents a numerical modeling approach for earthquake ground response and liquefaction using the parallel nonlinear finite element program, ParCYCLIC, which is designed for distributed-memory message-passing parallel computer systems. In ParCYCLIC, finite...

Calibrating the molecular clock: estimates of ground squirrel divergence made using fossil and geological time markers.
According to 5-Myr-old fossil evidence, ground squirrels within the genus Spermophilus had diverged into subgenera Spermophilus and Otospermophilus by late Miocene times. Radiometric dating has also provided a precise time for the sudden onset of a geological event, occurring 0.725 Myr ago, that initiated the complete and permanent reproductive isolation of two subspecies within the subgenus Ot...
